Politics With Your Baseball Cards?

Baseball card collectors are definitely happy that Topps Baseball is already on the market for 2008. But some of the hottest cards from that product don't even feature baseball players.

Just in time for one of the most intriguing primary seasons in recent memory, cut signature cards of presidential candidates from both U.S. political parties are generating some big interest - and big money. Topps recently announced that a Barack Obama cut signature numbered to 15 sold for over $3,000 on eBay, while opponent Hillary Clinton had a similar card numbered to 18 (like the one pictured here) fetch just over $1,300.

Autographs from personalities outside of the sports world aren't new to the hobby, or even to Topps Baseball, which has served up cut signatures from historical figures for several years. They do seem to be increasing in number though, popping up in forms like Upper Deck's Dual Mystery Cuts program and sets that mix sports and entertainment like Donruss Americana.

Whether or not that's a good thing is a matter of personal preference. Money talks, so some collectors are definitely digging these kinds of cards. But do the majority of sports card enthusiasts feel that way?

I don’t like these types of cards in the base sets of the brands. Issues like Allen & Ginter I am okay with. I do wish that anything like these cards have some kind of tie in to the sport. For example Presidents that threw out the first pitch. Actors that have made themselves known as avid fans of a particular team ect. Bill Murray and Jerry Seinfeld come to mind here.

One thing these cards do is bring mainstream attention to the hobby. Some say any publicity is good publicity.
