Got a Spare $10,000? Here's a Card for You

Tuesday March 18, 2008

Despite sluggish sales of this season's basketball cards that caused Upper Deck to cut production on some 2007-08 brands, there are still collectors willing to pay big money for some of current cards. Case in point, the card pictured here: a Michael Jordan/Kobe Bryant/LeBron James/Magic Johnson 1-of-1 quad autograph card from 2007-08 UD Black Basketball that is set to sell for over $10,000 on eBay.

For those unfamiliar with the UD Black brand, it is high end thrill-seeking taken to its logical extreme. Packs hold a single card numbered to 99 or less - most are numbered to 50 or less - and every card is either autographed or a multi-swatch memorabilia card.

At a suggested $125 per pack, it's not even the most expensive basketball product out there, though it's right up there with any sports card brand when it comes to cost per card. Is it worth it for the chance to pull something that becomes the cornerstone of a collection or turns a hefty profit? There's no question that for the segment of the hobby with the deepest pockets, it definitely is.
