Change of Heart Could Shake Up Favre's Cards

Friday July 11, 2008

The end of an athlete's career is often the end of regular intense interest in his sports cards. There's usually a spike of interest when he actually calls it quits, then a gradual decline as time passes - with perhaps one more spike a few years later if he's good enough to get inducted into his sport's Hall of Fame.

For the all-time greats though, that pattern doesn't always hold. And that's even more true when collectors don't quite believe that the athlete is done for good.

Such is the case with Brett Favre. His football cards and collectibles have stayed hot even months after his surprising announcement to call it a career after the 2007 season, and you got the feeling it was at least partially due to the feeling that he may still change his mind.

Turns out that feeling was valid. ESPN and other outlets are reporting today that Favre has asked the Packers for his release, which would open the door for him to come back to the NFL with another team.

If that happens - and a number of teams would love to make room on their rosters for No. 4 - it could be an interesting ride ahead for Favre's cards. Yes, some of the Green Bay faithful are likely to cringe at the sight of Favre in another uniform, any collectors he loses in Wisconsin could be more than offset by fans in his new market.

One thing's for sure: if you are thinking about selling off part of a Favre collection, you might want to sit tight for a bit and see how this plays out in the weeks ahead.
