Upper Deck Says M-L-Yes to More Soccer Cards

Saturday September 6, 2008

Back in 2006, Upper Deck seemed to be wavering on continuing to make trading cards for Major League Soccer after three straight years of sets. Then David Beckham arrived in Los Angeles, and lo and behold, there was another MLS set in the fall of 2007. Coincidence? I think not.

All joking aside, the star power that Beckham provides makes the success of American soccer cards a much safer bet. So it's no surprise that Upper Deck is once again putting the British star front and center to promote the release of its 2008 MLS product, which is on store shelves now.

Priced at a very reasonable $1.99 per 10-card pack, the new set boasts a full line of base cards and inserts, including two jersey cards per 36-pack box - and yes, Beckham is on the checklist. He's not one of 19 players who inked MLS Marks autographed cards, but Landon Donovan and Taylor Twellman are among the signers.

You may have to look a little harder to find them than you would for cards of the "Big Four" sports, but soccer fans probably won't mind the extra effort. There's more to the set than just Beckham, but you have to admit, it doesn't hurt that he's in there either.
