Quinn, Iverson Worth Watching as Situations Change
Sometimes you can tell whose sports cards are about to receive increased attention from collectors just by following the sports news, and today was a great example.
First came word that the Cleveland Browns were benching quarterback Derek Anderson - who has the lowest QB rating in the NFL among passers with at least 200 attempts - and giving Brady Quinn a chance to start. Quinn entered the league with a great deal of hype after starring at Notre Dame, but his cards leveled off quickly as he sat and watched. If he finds success, collector interest could ratchet back up quickly.
In the NBA, the breaking story was that the Denver Nuggets were set to deal Allen Iverson to the Detroit Pistons. Former Nuggets Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess are headed West, though it's expected that McDyess will be waived.
A.I. is an established superstar who's probably past the prime of his career, so it's not like all of a sudden people everywhere will discover his rookie cards. It will have a regional impact though, as Detroit collectors welcome their new acquisition. And you can't discount the ripple effect such trades can have on other players. Denver guard J.R. Smith, for one, could be set to explode with the increased playing time he's likely to receive.
Not every day is as eventful as this one, of course, but it pays to stay on top of the news because you never know when it may affect your collection.
