Will New Brees Blow Through the Hobby?
When the NFL's rookie class of 2001 first hit cardboard, it was Michael Vick who garnered the lion's share of interest from collectors. His unique running skills made his rookie cards catch fire, and his 2001 SP Authentic card reached historic values.
Once injuries and off-field troubles brought Vick down to earth, LaDainian Tomlinson took over as the top dog. LT's production was unmatched for most of this decade, and hobbyists flocked to him in increasing numbers.
But Tomlinson has looked mortal this season, and while watching Monday Night Football last night, I couldn't help but think there might be one more player who could emerge as the leader of the 2001 crowd. That would be New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who's currently on pace to throw for more than 5,000 yards in 2008.
It's not like he'd be coming out of nowhere, because football collectors have always shown Brees some love. He's only 29 though, and with quarterbacks showing the ability to play at a high level into their mid-30's or beyond - just look at Kurt Warner this year - he could be putting up big numbers well into the next decade.
That makes Brees cards look like they have great long term potential. If you're convinced, you can check out his lengthy list of 2001 rookie cards at the link below.
