After getting a positive reaction to UD Black Baseball, Upper Deck brings the brand to the rink for the 2008-09 hockey season. With a suggested retail price of $125 for each two-card pack, UD Black Hockey dispenses with most of the trappings of normal card sets and concentrates on dishing out visually creative autographs and memorabilia cards.
Some of the appeal is obvious, like having the athletes sign in gold or silver ink on the (appropriately) black parts of the cards. It also doesn't hurt that Upper Deck has pretty much every big name from throughout hockey history at its disposal, allowing for sets like Trophy Cuts - cut signature cards that pair autographs from a person an NHL award is named for with one from a player who won that very trophy.
The following cards are just a sample of what awaits in each pack, all of which contain one autograph or multi-swatch memorabilia card and one Rookie Letterman Patch card. 2008-09 UD Black Hockey hit store shelves in September 2008.
