2003-04 Dwyane Wade Rookie Card Checklist

By

Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade has seen a lot of highs and lows in his NBA career. He's experienced championships and injuries. He's been the youthful sparkplug on a veteran team and the heady leader of a rebuilding squad. Oh, and all of that happened in just his first six seasons as a pro.

A Chicago native, Wade became a star while playing college ball at Marquette. As a junior, he led the Golden Eagles to their first Final Four in 25 years, and his stock had climbed to the point where he was assured of becoming a lottery pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. Even so, he saw younger player like LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony go before he was taken fifth overall by the Heat.

Wade had a productive rookie season, but he and his team really took flight when Shaquille O'Neal was traded to Miami. Though Wade was the sidekick at first, he earned top billing when his star turn in the 2006 NBA Finals earned him MVP honors and the franchise its first title.

The next two seasons saw the injury bug bite Wade hard, and with the championship team dismantled, observers began to wonder if his fearless style of play simply lent itself to a career that would explode at the beginning and then fizzle out. But a rejuvenated Wade was one of the real revelations of the gold medal-winning U.S. men's basketball team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and he looked like his old dazzling self starting the 2008-09 NBA season as the leader of a younger Heat squad.

Take Wade's speed, scoring ability and crunch time heroics and add in good looks and an affable personality and you've got all the ingredients for a hobby star. His extensive selection of 2003-04 rookie cards may never quite see the values enjoyed by draft classmate James, but he should continue to be one of the NBA's most collected players until age or health force him to call it a career.
