1994 Marshall Faulk Rookie Card Checklist

All football fans know that in his prime, Marshall Faulk was one of the best running backs in the NFL. Now that he's retired, more fans might appreciate that he was one of the best of all time.

Faulk entered the NFL in 1994 with the usual high expectations that come with being the number tow pick overall, and he did not disappoint. As a rookie with the Colts, Faulk rushed for 1282 yards and 11 touchdowns. He quickly became the backbone of the Indianapolis offense, gaining over 1000 yards on the ground in four of his five seasons as a Colt and flashing the receiving skills out of the backfield that came to be his calling card.

He saved his best - 1319 rushing and 908 receiving yards - for his last season in Indy in 1998. While the Colts replaced him with another star in Edgerrin James, Faulk joined the St. Louis Rams and quickly turned in one of the finest seasons of all time while helping to lead his new team to the Super Bowl.

Injury problems meant that Faulk would enjoy only three seasons in St. Louis that were up to his usual standards, and he finally called it quits before the 2007 season. He leaves behind a Hall of Fame body of work, as he piled up over 19,000 yards from scrimmage in his 13 seasons. Faulk will always be known as a dual threat - and his 767 career receptions are an eye-popping number for a back - but he was underrated as a pure runner, finishing ninth on the NFL all-time rushing list with 12,279 yards.

Faulk has always been popular with his home team collectors, but didn't always have the nationwide buzz one might expect for a player with his skills. Perhaps he was held back by the underwhelming 1994 rookie class, as only Isaac Bruce and Trent Dilfer are even worth mentioning as players to collect from that season. In any case, even Faulk's most valuable rookie cards - like his SP # 3 and his Bowman # 2 - are extremely affordable and have room to grow when he receives his call from Canton in a few years.
