Call him the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde of quarterbacks. After a 2006 season that was one part superb, one part dreadful, fans never quite know which Rex Grossman will show up.
Grossman had to bide his time before taking over as the Chicago Bears field general, starting just eight games in his first three seasons due to injury. He finally stayed healthy in 2006, turning in one of the most up and down seasons by a quarterback in recent memory.
Only Marc Bulger of the St. Louis Rams had more games with a QB rating over 100 than Grossman's seven. And no one had more games with a rating under 40 than Grossman's five, which included a 1.3 rating in a victory over Minnesota and a 0.0 rating in an embarrassing Week 17 loss to Green Bay.
Despite redefining the word inconsistency, Grossman finished the season with 23 touchdown passes and more than 3,000 yards passing. His performances in the 2006 playoffs weren't great, but were good enough to help the Bears advance to Super Bowl XLI.
Grossman's rookie cards went on the same roller coaster ride as his play in 2006, heating up in the middle of the year before tailing off at the finish. A Dr. Jekyll night in Miami might be just the ticket to keep them at a high level for seasons to come.
